What is the Periodic Table?

Now talking about the Periodic Table: the periodic table is a tabular list of all the elements, including the atomic number and mass number. It was founded by Dmitri Mendeleve, it consist of a total of 118 elements, which includes a total of 98 existing naturally, which the rest are man-made.

It is made up of periods and groups, having valence increasing across the period and down the groups. This is to say elements in group 2 will have 2 at the outermost part of their shell, while elements in period one cumulates with one across the periods.

Mass Number: This is the number of Protons and Neutrons in the atomic nucleus, it varies except for Argon (Ar) and Calcium (Ca) having the same mass number.

Atomic Number: This is the number of protons or electrons in the nucleus of an atom. As a matter of fact it is the actual number of an element on the periodic table.

Periods/Groups of the Periodic Table

The modern periodic table has seven periods from one to seven (1 – 7) and groups number from one to eight (1 - 8).

Elements in group one are called Akali metals

Elements in groups two are called Akali earth-metals

Elements in group seven are called Halogens

Elements in group eight are called Inert or Rare gases
